20 years ago I was living in Joshua Tree and had reached a stage in my life as an artist where the need to make original work was very strong. I felt the desire to be open, to look into my heart and express or extract the love inside of me.I had been making climbing photographs and nudes from the time I picked up the camera at 15yrs combining the two seemed so, simple. There was one problem, I didnʼt own a camera. Most of my life has been ruled by degrees of separation, this is to say :
Iʼve always known someone, who knows someone who has a camera and lenses thatʼs not being used, so, I borrow it, sometimes for years. I jumped into my car and drove to Redlands California headquarters of 5.10 climbing shoes and barged into the office of Charles Cole, founder and President of the company.

True to his word Charles would call at least twice a year over the last 20 years and demand his camera back. I would drive from wherever I was to Redlands and stroll into his lair, " hereʼs your camera Charles " he would laugh and say "put it back in your car, letʼs go to lunch, Iʼm buying" A few weeks ago as I learned of Charles sudden death from a heart attack, I opened the case and took out our camera, tears rolled off my face as I looked at the wear marks and dents put there from 20 years of making art and living my dream. I miss those lunches so very much, someday soon Iʼm going to pass our camera forward, so perhaps another artist can feel the power of a friends, love. . .df
